Angela M. Cheung, MD, PhD, FRCP(C), CCD
Dr. Cheung is Founding Director of University Health Network Osteoporosis Program, Associate Director of University Health Network Women’s Health Program, Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute, and Founding Director of Centre of Excellence in Skeletal Health Assessment, at the University of Toronto. She is Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Health Policy Management and Evaluation, Public Health Sciences, Medical Imaging, Institute of Medical Sciences and Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto.
She obtained her M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1988, and her Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1997. She is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and is a board-certified internist in the United States. She has been in clinical practice for more than 20 years, and specializes in osteoporosis and postmenopausal women’s health including prevention of cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Cheung has received many honours and awards throughout her medical career for her excellence in clinical work, research and education. She currently holds a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) senior investigator award. Other recent ones include a 5-year CIHR midcareer investigator award, a 5-year Ontario Premier Research Excellence Award, a 5-year Ontario Ministry of Health Services Research Career Award, and a University Health Network Department of Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. She holds full membership in a number of professional associations including Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, American College of Physicians, North American Menopause Society, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, and International Society of Clinical Densitometry.
Dr. Cheung’s research interests are in the area of postmenopausal osteoporosis, especially in prevention and early diagnosis, and evaluation of new therapies and technologies. She has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and has held peer-reviewed grants from CIHR, International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC). She is a frequent speaker on osteoporosis and women's health, and has presented widely at national and international scientific meetings. She is Vice-Chair of Scientific Advisory Council and Chair of the Research Committee at Osteoporosis Canada.
